Powered Paragliding in Indiana

I was born and raised in Indiana. Although I've been all over the world, it's always nice to get back "home" for a visit to family and friends. I usually get back every couple of years and it never ceases to amaze me how things change in my home town.

Growing up it was a rather small town, but now it has grown to quite an impressive city with more and more shopping centers, restaurants, and housing developments springing up every time I turn around.

The traffic has also gotten pretty congested. It's pretty remarkable. It's a nice change to find a field, park, or similar occasion that I can turn into a makeshift air strip for me and my powered paraglider.

If you know a bit about powered paragliding, then you know that you don't really need much space to take off or land. You just have to be aware of all the potential obstacles around you and choose the right weather to fly.

I've taken off in church yards, hospital grounds, high school sporting fields, and local parks. Of course, it's always a good idea to get permission to fly if you are going to attempt it on private property.

One year I happened to be back in Indiana during the annual Youth Conference of First Baptist Church of Hammond and was asked to fly over one of their events - a bus smash up derby.

It was early July, so of course I used my American Flag powered paraglider wing. It was a bit gusty on the day which slightly delayed my take off, but eventually I was able to soar over the arena and put on a little show. Most of the attendees seemed to enjoy the novelty of it all.

I know I enjoyed the experience! I'm looking forward to the next time I get to go powered paragliding in Indiana. You just never know what you might see.
